Vienna's public museums possess a large number of objects from the Islamic world. Exact numbers are difficult to determine but estimates reach about 40, 000 pieces of various quality. The present book brings these objects together and elucidates the history of their acquisition. The Viennese museums developed in large part from the extensive collections of the Habsburg dynasty, for which such representative collections were an important part of their imperial self-presentation and from an early date these objects from the Islamic west were integrated in the complex layers of the politics of collecting. One finds them already in the medieval treasury as well as in the famous "chambers of art and marvels" and the armories of the early modern periods, the exhibition chambers of the Age of the Enlightenment and the museums which were founded in the 19th century in Vienna. The objects, which were woven into this structure and now preserved in Viennese museums, date from all periods in the history of Islam and derive from all regions of the Islamic world. This book should provide access to a fascinating part of the history of a constant cultural exchange and serves as an orientation guide for the user, in which the scattered parts of the collection of objects from the Islamic world in Viennese museums are brought together. From reader reviews:
